Notwithstanding the room hanging with laundry

The three girls age seven, ten, and six

(That’s Inge with the red hair holding up her hand

and spinning herself around like a crazy teapot)

And all the ironing that still needs to be done

(The several piles of sheets and children’s under-

clothes and not one silk slip or a bright blouse

to indicate that anything that went on in this

kitchen was ever more than white labor, more

tedious than office work) before beginning to

cook supper for her husband farmer who’d

be back late and tired from the field

It was not difficult to understand why

My cousin killed herself.
