I Remember

I remember

Sitting in a parking lot smoking cigarettes in my car with some friends

African-American

The police showed up and demanded to know

Where the guns were

What their gang names were?

We all were in high school

In Vermont

Honor students on the way to college

I remember

My 60 something year old father

Getting pulled over driving my girlfriend and I to the airport at five in the morning

Because he was driving

Cautiously

I remember

Being told to do what the police say or they will do you wrong

I remember

Wondering what happened to the bridge of my fathers nose

He said a police officer crushed it with a baton

During the civil rights movement

I remember

Reading about my

Godfather being beaten by the police

I remember

Good police

But they were the ones who saved me from a group of

Bat wielding white teenagers who were chanting

Kill the niggers

That is what police are supposed to do

I remember

Tamir

John

Eric

Sean

Michael

Samuel

Freddie

Sandra

Walter

Oscar

Amadou

Abner

Rodney

Alton

Philando

And too many more
